At the southern most tip of the boot of Italy in the region of Calabria lies the beach at Gioia Tauro. It is a very popular spot with kite surfers and wind surfers of all levels and abilities. The beach does get busy with tourists during the busy summer months and as a result, there may be surfing restrictions in place during this time. It may pay you to check it out before you set off. Having said this, the best times to surf here are between the months of April and October, where you can pick up some really nice thermal breezes.
Gioia Tauro has a medium to large soft sandy beach with plenty of space for you to surf from, out of season. However in season it can get fairly busy so you may need to avoid the busy months. To get here you will need to take the northbound A3 out of Reggio heading towards Gioia Tauro where you will find the beach and plenty of parking.
The main wind directions are south and west or variations thereof, all directions work well here, but the best direction is south west. This brings with it the scirocco thermal and can give 18-25 knots pretty much every day. The water quality is clean and the conditions are choppy pretty much all of the time. The water temperature is somewhere between 14-26 degrees so in the spring, summer and fall you can get away with shorts or a shorty, however during the winter a full suit is recommended.
There is parking close by and the town itself has a good selection of shops, bars, restaurants and accommodation. If you feel like letting your hair down a little, then the vibrant city of Reggio De Calabria isn't all that far away.
This is a reasonably safe spot, however there are a few passing ships and boats as this is the main thoroughfare from the mainland to the isle of Sicily.
